Our Physics Master of Science Programme

You finished the Bachelor’s degree but you’re still hungry for knowledge? Then you should continue with a Master programme. The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Ruhr-Universität Bochum offers two consecutive Master programmes with the degrees Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.). About 95% of our Bachelor students do a Master’s degree. Generally, a Bachelor’s degree and a meeting with the Student Advisory Service are prerequisites to be accepted in the Master programme.

Based on the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science programme imparts deeper knowledge and scientific methods in physics. The aim is an in-depth study and specialisation of physical skills as well as the ability to do scientific work independently. The Master course is made up of an advanced study phase and a research phase. The advanced study phase serves for the development and stabilisation of physical expertise and leads you to state-of-the-art research. The last study year is designed as a continuous research phase. In a core area of physics you will learn to do scientific work independently and work out a novel issue. Part of this is a Master’s thesis. In the frame of the thesis you will deal with a physical problem using scientific methods to gather new scientific insights. With a Master of Science degree you are qualified to work e.g. in research and development. Of course it is also possible to do a PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) afterwards.
