IdeenExpo 2022 - With the Chair of Astronomy into the colourful world of space

08.07.22 | Faculty

From 2 to 10 July 2022, members of the Department of Astronomy will be showing schoolchildren how the impressive colour images of space are created at the IdeenExpo in Hanover.

Thanks to space telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers are getting new and revealing images and data from the universe. However, the familiar and colourful images of distant star clusters and interstellar clouds are not snapshots that are delivered from space telescopes to scientists on Earth. This week at the IdeenExpo in Hanover, children and young people from secondary schools I and II can experience exactly how these images are created and what significance the colours have.

Staff from the Department of Astronomy at Bochum's Faculty of Physics will be offering workshops in the "Fascination of Space" section of the IdeenExpo and demonstrating how the impressive colour images of space are created. Those interested can also try to create images themselves on laptops.

The IdeenExpo in Hanover is the largest youth event for technology and science in Europe. Under the motto "Just do it!" children and young people have the opportunity to explore professions, opportunities and experiments in 13 thematic areas. In addition to the "Fascination of Space" area, which deals with developments in aeronautics and space travel, for example, there are other exciting thematic areas in which numerous future topics from agriculture to medicine have been prepared within the framework of technology and natural sciences.
