Save the Date: Euclid - our cosmological wide-angle lens in space

04/25/2013 | Event

On June 29, 2023, we cordially invite all interested parties to attend the lecture by Prof. Dr. Hendrik Hildebrandt.

As part of the Science Year 2023 and Bochum's "Week of the Universe", Professor Hildebrandt will give a lecture on "Euclid - our cosmological wide-angle lens in space" at the Christuskirche in Bochum on June 29.

What is the cause of the accelerated expansion of the universe? This question is one of the biggest mysteries of physics of the 21st century. Commonly, a so-called dark energy is assumed to describe this behavior. However, until today we do not know a fundamental physical description of this mysterious substance. Maybe it is not a "substance" at all but an insufficiency of the fundamental physical theories. Only cosmological observations seem to be able to bring us closer to an understanding of this phenomenon. In particular, measurements of the distribution of matter in the cosmos using the weak gravitational lensing effect are promising. Exactly these measurements are the goal of the ESA/NASA Euclid satellite mission which is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral in July 2023. In this talk, I will introduce the basics of this cosmological measurement, present recent measurement results from predecessor projects that may already provide clues to the origin of dark energy, and preview the groundbreaking data we expect soon from Euclid and the technology behind it. A few weeks before the launch of Euclid, the current knowledge about this highly exciting field of research is thus summarized in the hope that Euclid will answer the question about the nature of dark energy or else overturn the standard cosmological model and teach us something completely new.

Prof. Dr Hendrik Hildebrandt

The lecture begins at 7 p.m., admission is free. Further details will be announced.
