The Department Physics and Astronomy honors the scientific career of the Dortmund-based physicist and his successful collaboration with the Bochum Department.
As part of the Physics Colloquium on May 30, 2022, Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode was awarded an honorary professorship at Ruhr University Bochum’s Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. Rhode has been collaborating successfully with the BochumDepartment for many yearsDepartment is co-spokesperson for SFB 1491 (spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Julia Tjus, RUB), which was approved on January 1, 2022.

Prof. Dr. Ilya Eremin awards Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode an honorary professorship in the Department Physics and Astronomy.
By conferring the honorary professorship, the Department is recognizing Department only its fruitful collaboration with Rohde, but also his academic career and numerous research achievements—particularly in the field of neutrino astronomy—his dedication to academic teaching, and his role as a visionary, especially with regard to the interdisciplinary collaborations between physics, philosophy, and computer science that he initiated.
Impressive publication performance
Rhode studied physics and philosophy in Freiburg and received his doctorate there in 1990, initially in philosophy. He also completed his doctorate in physics at the University of Wuppertal in 1993. In 2002, Rhode also habilitated in Wuppertal. After a stay as a guest lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley, he initially returned to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and took over the chair of astroparticle physics before accepting the call to the C3 professorship for astroparticle physics at the TU Dortmund in 2004.
With more than 675 publications, Rhode has achieved a remarkable publication record in recent years. Many of the scientific journals have a high impact factor. He has done pioneering work, especially in the field of neutrino astronomy, and his work - also in other fields - is considered by other researchers to be highly relevant for the coming years.
