The Department Physics and Astronomy has performed exceptionally well in the nationwide CHE ranking and has received very high marks in many areas.
Every three years, the CHE University Ranking surveys the satisfaction of undergraduate physics students at Ruhr University Bochum. This year, the Department saw Department significant improvement in its results compared to previous surveys and ranked among the top performers in 71% of the indicators surveyed. An improvement over the last survey in 2021 was observed in 64% of the indicators surveyed.
Among other things, the support provided at the start of the program and the opportunities to tailor one’s academic focus were rated particularly highly. In recent years, the Department invested significant resources in support services at the start of the program. Under the leadership of the Dean of Studies, Prof. Dr. Heiko Krabbe, who served as project manager, the Study Network was established, for example, to provide comprehensive support to students during the introductory phase. The results of the CHE ranking survey confirm the successful implementation of these measures.
The Department scored particularly high in terms of opportunities for students to tailor their academic focus to their individual interests. No other physics department in Germany offers students as many options to shape their own course of study and set their own academic priorities as the one in Bochum. In the elective track, students are offered numerous modules—covering in-depth study or related disciplines—worth 28 credit points, which they can use to create a personalized academic profile.
In addition, students rated the availability, support, and feedback from faculty, the overall academic environment, course organization, exams, the introduction to academic research, library resources, IT infrastructure, and the laboratory courses offered very positively. Department the next survey, the Department aims to build on its lead, particularly in the area of “career guidance services.” For example, in the upcoming winter semester, students will once again have the opportunity to attend Department alumni seminar to learn Department the career paths former physics students from Bochum have taken and how they themselves can plan their own professional careers.
