On January 31, the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy approved the co-optations of Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday and Prof. Dr. Serim Ilday.

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is delighted to welcome two new researchers to its ranks: Prof. Dr. Serim Ilday and Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday. Last year, Prof. Dr. Serim Ilday and Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday were appointed to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and have now also been co-opted by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy.

Prof. Dr. Serim Ilday took over as head of the Simply Complex Lab at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum in January 2023. She is an internationally recognized expert in the field of complex systems, working at the interface of condensed matter, nonequilibrium and nonlinear physics. Her research aims to understand and control the dynamics of such systems and even predict their future evolution. This work is of crucial importance for a wide range of applications, from social networks to financial markets.

At the same time, Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday, a leading expert in the field of laser development, will join the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. His pioneering work in the development of ultrafast lasers and research into laser-matter interaction has opened up numerous application possibilities, from precision machining to new material processing effects. As head of the Ultrafast Optics & Lasers Laboratory UFOLAB at Bilkent University in Ankara, he has developed technologies that are used worldwide.

The appointment of Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday as Alexander von Humboldt Professor underlines the importance of his work and the high expectations for his future contributions. His new Center for Complex Laser-Matter Interactions will be a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

The faculty warmly welcomes Prof. Dr. Serim Ilday and Prof. Dr. F. Ömer Ilday and looks forward to a fruitful collaboration.
