Am 29. Juni 2026 findet das nächste Physikalische Kolloquium statt. Prof. Jayanne English ist Senior Scholar am Fachbereich Physik und Astronomie der University of Manitoba. Sie hält einen Vortrag zum Thema „Discovery Science Using Data Visualization“.
Abstract von Prof. English:
Data visualizations that resonate with human perception strongly enhance discovery-based science. Examples include perception-base colour mappings through to bold colour images that act as extraordinary ambassadors for astronomers. This lecture illustrates how black-and-white data can be mapped to explore parameter space, demonstrate results to fellow scientists, and communicate discoveries to the general public. Knowing how graphics are ‚read‘ by the eye-brain system, a scientist can harness a powerful visual grammar to present plots that are read „at a glance”. Using colour contrast and composition, multiple datasets can be combined into a striking image. A variety of examples, from information visualization through to Virtual Reality, will be presented by a research astronomer who has created numerous images for NASA and also trained as a visual artist. It will be followed by hands-on workshops throughout the week.
