The next Physics Colloquium will take place on June 29, 2026. Prof. Jayanne English is a Senior Scholar in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba. She will give a presentation on“Discovery Science Using Data Visualization.”
Abstract by Prof. English:
Data visualizations that resonate with human perception greatly enhance discovery-based science. Examples range from perception-based color mappings to bold color images that serve as extraordinary ambassadors for astronomers. This lecture illustrates how black-and-white data can be visualized to explore parameter space, demonstrate results to fellow scientists, and communicate discoveries to the general public. By understanding how graphics are “read” by the eye-brain system, a scientist can harness a powerful visual language to present plots that can be understood “at a glance.” Using color contrast and composition, multiple datasets can be combined into a striking image. A variety of examples—ranging from information visualization to virtual reality—will be presented by a research astronomer who has created numerous images for NASA and is also trained as a visual artist. The lecture will be followed by hands-on workshops throughout the week.
