On September 25, Univercity Bochum and 30 partners from the worlds of science, the city, and civil society will transform downtown Bochum into a vibrant festival of knowledge: “Geistesblitz Bochum – The Festival of Knowledge Centered on the Haus des Wissens” is making its debut! Visitors can look forward to exciting events that bring science to life—without the typical lecture hall atmosphere. The Physics-Department e at Ruhr University Bochum is participating with two program events:
Hands-On Activity Station for Children: The Physics of Glowing Gases

Agricola University of Applied Sciences
What makes gases glow? And what exactly are plasmas? Through small, hands-on experiments, you can explore this unique state of matter yourself and observe fascinating light effects. Students in our Collaborative Research Center 1316 Transient Atmospheric Plasmas will demonstrate how plasmas form, where they’re used, and what questions researchers are currently exploring. We invite budding researchers of all ages to stop by our hands-on station!

Our conversation partners have 30 minutes to bring their questions and unique perspectives and to learn more about the research being conducted at Ruhr University.
Our physicist Jonas Hellrung from the Chair of Theoretical Physics IV and the Collaborative Research Center 1491 Cosmic Interacting Matters – From Source to Signal talks about the fascinating world of neutrino astronomy. He explains how neutrinos can help us better understand the most extreme objects in the universe, such as black holes. In conversation with him, you’ll learn about the challenges involved in detecting these elusive particles and the exciting analyses of data from the “IceCube Neutrino Observatory” in Antarctica.
