On October 22, a ceremony was held to lay the cornerstone for the building that will house the Department Physics and Astronomy in three years’ time. Following extensive demolition work, the site is currently still a large construction zone; however, the new building is scheduled for completion in 2027. At that time, students and staff from our Department will Department first in the natural sciences to move into a new, modern building.
Modern infrastructure for physicists and students
The new building is an investment in the future of the natural sciences: it is intended to be a place that offers students and scientists modern learning and teaching conditions - a place where people enjoy studying, researching and working.
"Excellent research and teaching need an excellent infrastructure. This applies to our top researchers as well as to the next generation of academics."
Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of NRW.
Together with Dr. Dirk Günnewig, State Secretary for Finance of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Prof. Dr. Denise Manahan-Vaughan, Vice-Rector for Structure, Strategy and Planning and the Construction and Real Estate Management of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (BLB NRW) responsible for the new building, the Minister ceremoniously laid the foundation stone.
Past, present and future of the Ruhr-Universität
Together with the foundation stone, a time capsule was also walled in on the building site. Inside: A current newsletter from the RUB Rectorate, coins for good luck and a small pair of rubber boots. These are intended as a reminder of the RUB's early days. In the first years after the university opened in 1965, many parts of the campus still resembled a large building site: it was not uncommon to see students sitting in lectures wearing rubber boots.
