Physics Colloquium on 17.10.2022: Cosmology With the Responsible Use of Machines

12.10.22 | Event

On Monday17.10.22) at 12.00 c.t. the next meeting of our physics colloquium will take place.

The speaker will be Prof. Dr. Benjamin Joachimi (University College London) on the topic: "Cosmology With the Responsible Use of Machines."

Large-scale structure cosmology is about to experience a data deluge with several new surveys that are unprecedented in terms of their sky coverage, depth, and fidelity. At the same time we are witnessing a technological revolution with machine learning and Big Data science pervading all aspects of science. While it is tempting to train the machines to (eventually) do all cosmological data analysis for us, I will argue for a more measured, rigorous and interpretable approach, and highlight a number of recent advances in the analysis of cosmic large-scale structure (and beyond) where Artificial Intelligence tools come to the aid of the responsible cosmologist.

Abstract of Prof. Dr. Benjamin Joachimi’s presentation. The session will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Hendrik Hildebrandt. The Department cordially Department all interested parties to attend. The event will take place in Lecture Hall HNC 10 and hybrid via Zoom. We will serve coffee and cookies before the colloquium.
