From April 14 to 17, 2025, the schoolgirl project week of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy took place in the Alfried Krupp School Laboratory. Under the motto "Researcher for a week", 41 schoolgirls from the Ruhr region were able to immerse themselves in the world of science.

Choice of 3 workshops

Accompanied by student and scientific mentors, the pupils in grades 8 to 10 worked on a topic of their choice: in the "The Colors of the Stars" workshop, they explored how to learn more about our cosmos with colorful images from space. In "From Plasma to Gold Coating", the pupils were able to learn about the practical applications of plasmas and coat a souvenir themselves. The "Physics in Medicine" workshop was also all about experimenting - the participants carried out ultrasound examinations, X-rayed objects and measured their own heartbeat, among other things

Get a taste of university life and get to know research

In addition to the workshops, the supporting program offered insights into everyday university life. Lunch together in the canteen encouraged exchange and new friendships. Prof. Anna Böhmer's lecture "Perfect magnets through dancing electrons" and laboratory tours offered exciting insights into research and work as a physicist.

Another highlight was a visit to the Bochum Planetarium with the show "To the Stars" and a Q&A session with Prof. Susanne Hüttemeister. On the last day, the students presented their results in a poster session. The week was rounded off with a quiz duel and a final meal together with pizza and homemade nitrogen ice cream.
