Department of Physics and Astronomy

Inside RUB: Open House on June 11, 2026

May 8, 2026 | Students, Prospective Students, Event

Are you interested in the natural sciences and want to find out if studying physics is right for you? Then come to Ruhr University Bochum on June 11, 2026!

The Physics Department is one of five departments NaWigator, an alliance ofdepartments RUB. Our mission: We share our passion for the natural sciences, give you insights into STEM studies, and help you navigate your academic path. Together, we’ve put together a diverse program for you, featuring exciting workshops, tours of our labs and campus observatory, and an experiment battle with the Chemistry Department.

Here is our program:

When?What?What's it about?
10 a.m.–4 p.m.Nawigator Mile in front of HIBCome to the NaWigator Mile and experience hands-on science! Look forward to experiments, brain teasers, VR, music, and snacks. Meet students and scientists and find out what to expect from your studies.
10:00–10:45NaWiGator: Your Path to the Natural Sciences (HIB)Get an overview of your studies in the natural sciences and find out what’s right for you! We’ll show you different study options and help you make your decision.
11:00–11:45Particle Physics Lab Tour: Discover the world of the smallest building blocks (Meeting point: in front of the NB Nordstraße building)Visit our lab and see how particle physicists work! We’ll show you how a particle detector is built and conduct exciting experiments on cooling.
12:00–12:45The World of Plasmas – Hands-On Workshop (Meeting point: in front of Building NB, Nordstraße)Experiment with these fascinating luminous gases and discover their fascinating applications in technology and everyday life.
1:00–1:45 p.m."The Battle of the Elements" – featuring experiments in chemistry and physics (HNB)When there are loud bangs, flashes of light, and maybe even a slightly pungent smell in the lecture hall, it’s time for the battle of the elements to begin! You’ve definitely never seen spectacular experiments like these at school before.
2:00–2:45 p.m.NaWiGator: Your Path to the Natural Sciences (HIA)Get an overview of your studies in the natural sciences and find out what’s right for you! We’ll show you different study options and help you make your decision.
3:00–3:45 p.m.Hands-On Astronomy: Guided Tour of the Campus Observatory (Meeting point: in front of Building NB, Nordstraße)We’re opening the doors to one of the most exciting places on campus: our very own observatory. Here, you can explore the telescopes and astronomical instruments we use to study our universe—from planets and stars to distant galaxies.
