After completing the Master's degree, students can qualify for a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) by writing a doctoral thesis. The doctoral thesis demonstrates the ability to conduct independent scientific research. Such a doctoral thesis requires about three years of increasingly independent research on previously unsolved problems and issues.
As of January 10, 2023, there are new doctoral regulations.
After the entry into force of these regulations, the doctoral regulations of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of September 26, 2011 (PromO 2011) remain in force up to and including the winter semester 2025/2026. Thus, all doctoral candidates who have already been admitted to doctoral studies according to the PromO 2011 can finish their doctoral studies until 31.03.2026 or apply to do their doctorate according to these doctoral regulations.
