After completing the Master's degree, students can qualify for a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) by writing a doctoral thesis. The doctoral thesis demonstrates the ability to conduct independent scientific research. Such a doctoral thesis requires about three years of increasingly independent research on previously unsolved problems and issues.
Currently, two doctoral regulations run in parallel. For applicants who applied for admission before 10.10.2011, the doctoral regulations of 25.03.1987(PromO 1987) apply - for all applicants who applied for admission after 10.10.2011, the doctoral regulations of 10.10.2011(PromO 2011) apply.
