The transmission electron microscope (TEM) is a powerful tool for measuring not only local variations in microstructure and composition in materials, but also functional properties and dynamic processes. In particular, phase contrast techniques such as electron holography can be used to record local variations in magnetic field and electrostatic potential within and outside materials with nm to atomic spatial resolution. I will illustrate how such measurements can be made both in projection and in three dimensions, as well as in the presence of external stimuli. The examples that I will present include studies of magnetic solitons, high entropy alloys, epitaxial magnetic layers and doped semiconductors. I will also describe studies of electron interference phenomena, such as the Young-Feynman two-slit experiment and the use of electron wavefront shaping to generate tuneable electron probes for studies of radiation-sensitive samples with improved contrast and dose efficiency. I will conclude the talk with an update on plans for new TEMs in the Ernst Ruska-Centre in Forschungszentrum Jülich based on the „ER-C 2.0“ project. This project is based on five next-generation electron microscopes, which will be delivered in 2025 and 2026.
