New honorary professorship for Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode

10.06.22 | Faculty

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy honours the scientific career and successful cooperation of the Dortmund physicist with the Bochum faculty.

During the Physics Colloquium, Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode was awarded the honorary professorship of the Ruhr University Bochum at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy on 30 May 2022. Rhode has already been cooperating successfully with the Bochum Physics Faculty for many years and is co-spokesperson of SFB 1491 (spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Julia Tjus, RUB), which was approved on 1 January 2022.

Prof. Dr. Ilya Eremin awards Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode the honorary professorship of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy.

Prof. Dr. Ilya Eremin awards Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode the honorary professorship of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy.

With the award of the honorary professorship, the faculty recognises not only the fruitful collaboration with Rohde, but also his scientific career and numerous research successes, especially in the field of neutrino astronomy, his commitment to academic teaching and his role as a source of ideas, especially with regard to the interdisciplinary collaborations he founded between physics, philosophy and computer science.

Impressive publication performance

Rhode studied physics and philosophy in Freiburg and received his doctorate there in 1990, initially in philosophy. He also completed his doctorate in physics at the University of Wuppertal in 1993. In 2002, Rhode also habilitated in Wuppertal. After a stay as a guest lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley, he initially returned to the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and took over the chair of astroparticle physics before accepting the call to the C3 professorship for astroparticle physics at the TU Dortmund in 2004.

With more than 675 publications, Rhode has achieved a remarkable publication record in recent years. Many of the scientific journals have a high impact factor. He has done pioneering work, especially in the field of neutrino astronomy, and his work - also in other fields - is considered by other researchers to be highly relevant for the coming years.
